ABOUT
Sheth Mangaldas Girdhardas Town Hall, also known as Town Hall, is one of the oldest performing venues and public halls in western Ahmedabad.
Over the ensuing decades, more construction and residential development were added to the western banks of the Sabarmati River with the construction of Ellisbridge in 1891. The Ahmedabad government and prominent business families saw the necessity for a public auditorium. In the 1930s, Claude Batley was given the task of designing the Town Hall. The hall, which bears the name Mangaldas after the well-known textile industrialist, was later refurbished by Kamal Mangaldas in the late 1990s and Balkrishna Doshi in the 1960s.
The octagonal building rises to a dome topped by a lantern that provides light to the interior assembly spaces from a red brick base. Architectural features common to Gujarati structures are elaborate grills and chhajjas (eaves) that shield the interiors from the intense sun.
