Architect Rahul Mehrotra has meticulously rebuilt two buildings that make up the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum complex, which is nestled amidst towering trees and verdant gardens. More than a millennium of Indian art is on display in the main structure, a colonial home constructed in 1905. The collection's varied nature is reflected in the selection that is on show. It aims to preserve the spirit of the family house while striking a balance between historical significance and personal preferences. The paintings on display are from a variety of traditions and styles, including Tibetan Thangkas, portraits from the Company School, modernist paintings from the Bengal School, paintings from the Persian, Mughal, Deccan, Pahari, and Rajasthani schools, and painted postcards from India before independence.
Over a millennium has passed since the creation of stone, metal, wood, and Bidri art. Space has been set aside in the neighboring Claude Batley House, a 1930s-era structure, to accommodate temporary exhibitions, artist retrospectives, and displays of the work of up-and-coming artists. To provide more display space, a glass gallery that is different and one-of-a-kind has been added, maintaining the older building's charm intact. Additionally, the property features a tiny amphitheater that can accommodate 250 people for conferences, debates, musical soirees, and minor shows. We therefore intend to create a dynamic and colorful atmosphere to entice guests for a cultural treat by planning a variety of activities that will change throughout the year.
